"I like this teacher because he really wants to help the student to achieve his highest..."Scott is a versatile musician with a background in Opera, Oratorio, Music Theater and Choral music. He graduated in 2000 with a Masters Degree in Choral Conducting and Voice Performance from Northwestern University of Evanston, IL, with an award for excellence in teaching. While there he studied choral conducting with Dr. Robert Harris, Mr. Fred Ockwell and Dr. Malory Thompson, and studied voice with Dr. Richard Alderson, and coached and performed in Master Classes with Mignon Dunn, William Warfield, and Sherrill Milnes.
As a singer, Scott has worked with regional theaters and orchestras in Maryland, Illinois, and Texas, performing leading roles in Guys & Dolls, Secret Garden, Jekyll & Hyde, Oklahoma, Anything Goes, She Loves Me, and A Little Night Music. He also has played the Erik/Phantom in Northwestern University’s production of Phantom, Belcore in Elixir of Love at the Bayview Music Festival, and both Ottone in The Coronation of Poppea, and Dappertutto in Les Contes d’Hoffmann both at Northwestern University.
Scott is a frequent recitalist and soloist, recently being featured on two faculty concerts of the Peabody Prep Music School in Baltimore, MD. His oratorio credits include the solos from Fauré’s Requiem, Brahms’s A German Requiem, the Mozart Mass in C, and Honegger’s King David, Mendelssohn’s Psalm 95, Vaughn William’s Hodie and Dvorak’s Te Deum.
With over ten years of teaching experience, Scott has worked with a variety of students of all levels from all walks of life. He enjoys helping people find their true and unique voice, teaching students new ways to think about music and singing.
What do you want to learn? Why are you taking voice lessons? These are the first questions we will talk about. From there we will develop a lesson plan that allows you to achieve your goals.
I teach from the Bel Canto school of thought, where freedom and ease of production with breath support are keys to vocal achievement. I use a variety of music to help students achieve their best sounds, from both the classical and contemporary worlds. Students will learn to meld both technique and interpretation into song performance.
Learning to sing is a journey of self discovery. Understanding your voice and how to use it healthily and properly will make you a better singer no matter if you sing for recreation or are preparing for auditions.
