Learn a New Language in Los Angeles

By Silvano K. Los Angeles Korean Teacher

Los Angeles is one of the most ideal places in the United States to learn Korean. With a large population of Korean Americans, LA is one of the best cities to enjoy Korean traditions like art, food, and culture.

The Korean-American community has grown significantly since the Immigration Reform Act was passed in 1965. There are approximately 1.4 million Korean Americans in the United States, and more than 35 percent of the Korean-American population lives in California.

It’s rare to find Korean Americans who aren’t familiar with Korean speech. Language is embedded in culture, but it can be easily forgotten if cultural rituals are not practiced regularly. Korean Americans in Los Angeles try their best to hold on to their traditions, and teach Korean culture and history to future generations.

If you’re taking Korean lessons in Los Angeles, there are some fantastic places to learn about Korean culture and history. Check out the Korean Cultural Center of Los Angeles (KCCLA) for access to an extensive library of books, videos, and music. KCCLA allows guests to experience Korean traditions and history through specialized programs, sponsored events, an art gallery, and a collection of educational resources.

Los Angeles hosts numerous Korean heritage festivals throughout the year. Don’t miss the annual LA Korean Festival at Seoul International Park. Founded in 1973, the LA Korean Festival is a highly-anticipated event, and a wonderful opportunity to experience and enjoy Korean culture and history.

Speaking of Korean culture, we can’t forget about the globalization of Korean pop music (K-Pop). Remember the hit “Gangnam Style?” With over a billion YouTube views, the viral video turned Korean artist Psy into a household name. You can see some of the most famous Korean music stars perform at The Korea Times Music Festival at the Hollywood Bowl.

Learning Korean is not always easy, but you will have a better overall learning experience if you have access to the culture, history, and traditions. With so many excellent learning resources, Los Angeles is an ideal city to learn Korean. If you’re taking Korean lessons in LA, be sure to take advantage of the Korean restaurants, stores, festivals, and events, and don’t forget to have fun!
