Teaching Violin in Chicago

Jessica M.

By Jessica M.-Chicago Violin Teacher

I honestly cannot remember a time when music wasn’t a part of my life. I was two-years-old when I started ballet and three when I began playing the Suzuki violin. As a child, I was the little performer, constantly putting on plays that I’d written, acting out musicals in front of the television, and playing violin for anyone who would listen. Music allowed me to feel special and different from other kids my age. By middle school, when being different was something to hide rather than embrace, music was there once again to be my refuge. I joined choirs and orchestras, interacting with kids my age who felt just as passionately about it as I did. We formed our own family and created a place where we could belong.

As an adult, my passion has changed from performing to teaching violin lessons in Chicago. As a child, I found my passion making music in Chicago, and now as an adult, it is a joy to share that gift with others. Teaching singing and violin lessons in my favorite city in the world has given me the opportunity to introduce the world of music to others, give them a bond that time can’t erase, and show them that it is ok to be different. As a music teacher, my favorite moment is when a student has a breakthrough and something they’ve worked so hard for suddenly becomes easy. The sense of recognition and pride on their faces is priceless. Through music, they can feel at home. For me, that’s what it’s all about.
