Violin Lessons in Houston

By Rebecca L. - Houston Violin Teacher

Are you interested in learning a musical instrument and having fun at the same time? The violin may be the perfect instrument to pick up! My name is Rebecca, and after living and teaching in both Taiwan and New York, I am now studying and teaching around the Houston area.

I believe that music has a broader meaning than many people realize. Music is not the only thing people take away from lessons; music develops the ability to concentrate and develops characteristics such as patience and dedication. That being said, music teaches very important life skills. Without a doubt, music is a great and special hobby.

Houston is a wonderful city to experience many diverse and unique music events! A great number of the country’s elite musical art programs are all located in the heart of Houston, such as the Houston Symphony, Houston Grand Opera, Houston Ballet, Da Camera, The Mercury, and Rice Shepherd School of Music. Attending these programs and events can provide a great inspiration to you while taking violin lessons in Houston.

The Houston Symphony performs around three days a week at the Jones Hall, featuring top musicians from all over the world. Furthermore, The Houston Grand Opera and Houston Ballet are both brilliant performances to attend if you are wanting to see or experience something different. Uniquely, Da Camera concerts offer a broad range of repertoire, along with music styles ranging from classical to jazz.

On the contrary, The Mercury places a strong emphasis on the Baroque style of music. That being said, it’s the ideal orchestra to check out for those who are fans of early classical music! Equally important, The Mercury participates in community outreach and education. Additionally, the Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra at Rice University is commonly known for being the best university orchestra within the United States. The symphony orchestra performs multiple concerts per semester, which are generally free for the public.

Family concerts are great opportunities for children to be introduced to music at a young age. Despite having never touched an instrument before, children often leave a concert feeling inspired and wowed. Often, it is the fun associated with listening, learning, and exploring different musical instruments that piques a child’s interest in music. The Shepherd School of Music organizes family concerts appropriate for all ages. Various instruments are shown in the lobby for kids to explore and see before the concert. For more information, all events are posted on the school calendar here: http://music.rice.edu/calendar/.

Last but not least, the Houston Youth Symphony is another wonderful resource for teens to experience and get involved in. It is composed of four orchestras made for students at different levels, where they can rehearse and perform with many students like themselves!

If music is an interest of yours, buying concert tickets are simple and affordable. Whether attending a concert as a passion or out of sheer boredom, individuals who walk in are guaranteed to take away a unique perspective on music. Concerts also make great family outings - thus are definitely worth a visit! Finally, attending concerts not only helps students become better musicians, it will also inspire them on many different levels. So, good luck in your violin lessons in Houston, and may you enjoy the wonderful selection of musical opportunities open to you!
