“Guess what! ... I’m auditioning for The Voice!” Destinee’s blue eyes danced as she gushed with the good news. I teach singing lessons in Louisville, KY and Destinee is one of my students. She began private voice lessons to prepare for an audition for the TV reality-show, X- Factor. She tried out in Chicago and of the over 10,000 that auditioned that day, Destinee made it to the top 250. I was enormously proud of her, and I found her hard work and determination inspiring. And so as Destinee and her mother sat on the edge of my couch, beaming at the upcoming opportunity, I found myself exclaiming, “Yes, and I’m coming and auditioning right along with you!” The words fell from my lips before I had time to consider the commitment I had just made. Yet, I knew that it was truly kismet.

My mind whirred with excitement, thinking of our auditions and the incredible opportunity of sharing each step of this experience with my student. Later that week I received a text from another one my students, Katelyn. Katelyn and Destinee have lived next door to one another for years. Yet, it wasn’t until passing each other last month on the way to and from voice lessons, when they realized they were both taking private voice lessons, and in fact, had the same teacher. So, I was astonished and elated when I read Katelyn’s enthusiastic text, “Guess what! You know that show, The Voice? Well, I’m going to audition for it!”

This July, we three song birds are taking the auditions for The Voice by storm. Look out Adam, Blake, Cee Lo, and Christina, because Louisville is on its way to the top!
